Fab-5 was formed in January 2000, and has been an initiative of the Northwest Leadership Foundation.

In 2005, responding to the lack of relevant creative outlets for undeserved youth (especially youth of color) Fab-5 created L.I.F.E. (Living In Free Expression) — an intensive series of urban arts workshops designed to allow youth to develop and explore their unique voices through a variety of different urban arts mediums (DJing, legal graffiti, breakdancing & the lyricists lounge).

Although Fab-5 work is centered on creating art, our main outcomes are cultivating communities where youth from diverse backgrounds can gather, collaborate, learn and share ideas.

Fab-5 believes that youth are the ones who influence others to change, and what better way to cultivate change then by bringing together people from diverse backgrounds to celebrate the art of creation. By empowering youth via self-expression, Fab-5 builds solid leaders and community minded individuals through mentorship, leadership and positive role models.

In addition to Fab-5’s educational programming within the K-12 public school system, after school centers and juvenile detention facilities, Fab-5 also delivers special event programming throughout the year at festivals, conferences, receptions and local businesses via:

  • live painting / public art presentations /murals
  • live dance showcases / pop-up galleries / community art projects
  • DJing/musical showcases prominently featuring our students.

These events serve thousands of youth, adults, and families annually, becoming a catalyst for innovate partnerships with organizations like:

  • University of Puget Sound
  • Greater Tacoma Community Foundation
  • Museum of Glass
  • Tacoma Art Museum
  • University of Washington
  • The Russell Family Foundation
  • Intel Corporation
  • The Evergreen State College
  • Microsoft
  • Toyota/SCION
  • City of Tacoma
  • & the Broadway Center of Performing Arts
